About Library

Central Library of the Heritage Institute of Technology, Kolkata (HITK), is the nerve center for all academic activities of the Institute. It is situated in the Central Building, spreading over approximately 20,000 sq feet. The library is centrally air-conditioned and equipped with computers and communication network and has a seating capacity of 250 readers. This is equipped with CCTV , Antitheft Solution system and also with Wi-Fi connectivity. The library is fully computerized with LIBSYS library management software, with barcode technology. OPAC / WEB-OPAC facilities are available through the campus network and outside the campus. It is fully automated and is one of the most modern Engineering College libraries in West Bengal. HITK library comprises MCA library, Departmental Libraries and also a fully equiped Digital Library.

Aims and Objectives

  • To select, acquire, organize and utilize reading materials for the purpose of information dissemination, relevant to the aims and objectives of the Institute.
  • To provide services to users for effective utilization of library resources.

To encourage reading habits particularly of the student community and to make them aware of the importance of Library in career building


  • The Central Library follows the most modern systems by allowing readers to have direct access to the shelves of the books and journals. The readers, thus, can browse and select books of their choice.
  • It follows library management software, called “LibSys (LSEASE)”. It is an integrated multi-user Library Management System. The main functions of this system are processing of books, using “Bar-Code” and circulation of books applying scanner.
  • Procurement of Books ,Journals and other materials etc. and record of attendance is done through ERP system of the Institute.
  • Books can be borrowed for home reading (maximum 6 books for 60 days for teachers, 4 books for B.Tech & MCA and 5 books for M.Tech students for 21 days and 3 books for 30 days for staff members).
  • Semester Issue” facility: It is an additional facility provided to B.Tech and MCA students. They can retain books (normally one text book for each subject) for the entire semester.


Other Libraries

Within the Campus, there are MBA library (Heritage Business School) having good collections of books and National & International Journals; and The Heritage Academy Library (BBA/BCA/Media science) having about 12,000 books and journals. The Heritage Law college library and The Heritage College Library are being developed and organized. The Heritage School has three libraries for different levels of students.

The HITK library has a generous collection of Engineering & Management books, Reference books, Scientific Journals, Reports, etc. In addition, it has books on Humanities, Social Sciences and Career Guidance.

Library Rules

  • Library membership card is compulsory while issuing books for home reading. It is not transferable.
  • The books must NOT be shelved by the users and should be left on the table.
  • Books once issued will not be allowed to keep inside the library.
  • Guidelines for photocopying should be followed.
  • Students are not allowed in the library without membership cards
  • Strict silence should be maintained inside the library.
  • Carrying of bags, folders, personal books or any printed materials, laptop, walkman, food articles are strictly prohibited in the library. Mobile phones must be switched off before entering the library.
  • Any damage or loss of book should be replaced within a week by a new one with prior intimation to the Librarian in advance.
  • No project/ laboratory works, group discussions or any kind of class meetings would be allowed inside the library.
  • Issued books along with the gate pass must be shown to the security personnel at the entrance before leaving the library.
  • Loss of library/Identity card must be reported to the Librarian immediately. For a duplicate card, all supporting documents regarding its loss should be submitted to the Administration.
