ABOUT HERITAGE INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY

Vision

To prepare dynamic and caring citizens to meet the challenges of global society while retaining their traditional values.

Mission

Heritage Institute of Technology was set up on the eastern fringes of Kolkata in 2001 by Kalyan Bharti Trust founded by a group of 22 Kolkata based industrialists. To meet the demand for technical manpower and in view of fiscal constraints at the Governmental level, Kalyan Bharti Trust supplemented the state government's efforts in setting up new engineering colleges by establishing this Institute in September 2001.

Heritage Institute of Technology, Kolkata (HITK) is a private Autonomous Engineering College built in a lush green campus covering a vast area of land. It is a 10-minute drive from Eastern Metropolitan Bypass (near Ruby Hospital, about 2 km away). The nearest airport is Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport at Dum Dum, Kolkata.

The Institute offers one undergraduate programme (B. Tech.) and two post graduate programmes (M. Tech. and MCA). All courses are approved by the All India Council for Technical Education AICTE, Government of India and the Department of Higher Education, Government of West Bengal. It is affiliated to the Maulana Abul Kalam Azad University of Technology (MAKAUT, erstwhile WBUT). The departments have a good mix of young and experienced faculty members who are competent and well qualified. All laboratories are well equipped and manned by qualified and experienced technical staff members. The Institute has been accredited by NAAC with B++ grade for a period of 5 years w.e.f. 22.02.2017.

It has a large Central Library with extensive collection of books and national and international journals with in-house e-library facilities. A Central Computer Centre is exclusively available to the students for net surfing and online study. Besides, all post-graduate degree awarding departments have its own project laboratories for undertaking project, research and development works. All the computers are LAN connected with 200 Mbps leased line for 24 hours. Entire campus is covered by free Wi-Fi. All students are provided with unique email id for having anytime access to Institute related information. A Satellite Interactive Terminal (SIT), installed by ISRO and WBUT, with video conferencing facilities is also available.

There are excellent facilities for outdoor games and sports like cricket, football, volleyball, basketball etc. To nurture the talents of the students in various extracurricular activities like dramatics, dance, music, sports and other social works, different activity clubs have been formed under the guidance of different faculty members.

The Institute has an excellent cafeteria with a seating capacity for more than 200 persons. It has a well-planned hygienic kitchen run by a reputed caterer at administered prices. Multi-cuisine lunch and snacks are being served in the cafeteria. A fast food restaurant-cum-convenience store is also there.

HITK students have consistently shown excellent performance in academic/ non-academic fields. They have excelled in exams like GATE/CAT/GRE/TOEFL. Apart from these, many won scholarships for studies in foreign universities. As students, they have won many laurels for the Institute by winning in all India level Hackathon competitions along with many other inter-college events. Today the alumni of HITK can be spotted in a wide spectrum of society. Many have proved themselves to be successful entrepreneurs generating employment to others, while many have joined the civil services and serving the nation as IAS/IPS officials.

ABOUT MECHANICAL ENGINEERING DEPARTMENT

Vision

To prepare innovative and dynamic mechanical engineers who will contribute to national and international development while retaining their professional ethics.

Mission

Welcome to the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Autonomous Heritage Institute of Technology, Kolkata. The department started its journey in the year of 2001 as a department for supporting other degree awarding engineering departments. Over the next several years, the department grew its expertise and competence in the core Mechanical Engineering curriculum and became a degree awarding department from 2011. It now has a strong undergraduate program in mechanical engineering with student strength of around 500. The department has 25 full-time faculty members and over 16 full-time technical support staff.

The department offers a science-based engineering curriculum the primary focus of which is to impart technical know-how to students, promote their problem solving skills and encourage innovation of new technologies. The department offers large number of professional/open elective papers for providing wide spectrum of options to the students to pursue their interest in emerging fields like Mechatronics, Robotics, Micro and Nano Manufacturing etc. The course contents are periodically updated for introducing new scientific and technological developments.

The department is very well equipped with Advanced Manufacturing lab, Mechatronics Lab, Rapid Prototyping Lab, Dynamics of Machines Lab, Fluid Power Control Lab, Refrigeration & Air-conditioning Lab, IC Engine Lab, Heat Transfer & Applied Thermodynamics Lab amongst others. It has well equipped workshop for foundry, welding, machining, carpentry and sheet metal forming that caters to the 1st year students of all departments over and above the mechanical engineering students of all years. The department also has a graphics lab with more than 50 computing systems and workstations loaded with wide range of Design, FEM and CFD software products covering all areas of mechanical engineering. Faculty members use these facilities to regularly undertake consultancy work for industries to improve design of their products.

In the final year, students are required to undertake projects which involve literature survey, design of the system or product, procurement of suitable materials from market, utilization of department’s workshop to fabricate the product, testing and final working demonstration in front of department faculty as well as external experts. Final year students are also required to carry out design of a real-life industrial product. Thus the students are exposed to the problems faced by today’s societies, and are trained to address those problems through innovative thinking to develop appropriate technological solutions. The faculty members of the department drive these activities through their teaching programs and diverse research interests, covering numerous facets of Mechanical Engineering Science and Applications.

Our students have been recruited by various reputed concerns in India like ISRO, BPCL, HPCL, Godrej in core sector apart from IT companies. Some of our students have been recruited by overseas organizations like Young Optics, Taiwan. A few students have shown tremendous entrepreneurial skills by opening a few start-up ventures.

We feel proud to note that a large number of students regularly take admission for higher studies to various IITs/IISc/NITs as well as other foreign universities.

The department has a distinguished record in both teaching and research. Faculty members have excellent academic credentials and regularly publish papers and organize seminars and conferences. Many of the young faculty members are engaged in PhD level research works in well known universities.
